Doing our bit for the Environment
We were wondering how we could minimise waste going to landfill, and have tried our hardest to make our packaging look good but still be eco-friendly. The packaging used to pack and send your gift box (not including some of the products) can, with the exception of the stickers, either be:
REUSED: Your gift box can be kept as a keepsake, the woodwool, honeycomb wrap and brown paper for packaging, the tissue paper and ribbon for presents.
COMPOSTED: Woodwool, brown paper (torn into little pieces), protective honeycomb wrap for glass products.
RECYCLED: Paper ribbon, brown paper, paper tape, protective honeycomb wrap for glass products, greetings card, tissue paper (except for the gold one).

The fill is woodwool – made of natural fibres and biodegradable. It is made from untreated or heat-treated pine. It has no chemicals and is home compostable – it composts like brown material as it is mainly carbon e.g. wood chips/autumn leaves, so needs the presence of green material such as food scraps (C:N ratio of 25-30).
The tissue paper is dyed with water-based inks and is biodegradable. It can be reused or recycled. Our ribbons are made from woven paper and are biodegradable. They can be reused or recycled.
The boxes are covered in brown paper for protection during couriering – it is made from recycled paper, but even this can be reused or recycled or composted (needs to be torn into little pieces for composting). Even our tape is kraft paper-based tape and can be recycled.
To protect our glass products, we use a bubble wrap alternative – a combination of a patented die cut kraft paper with a tissue interleaf paper which expands to a 3D honeycomb structure. It is naturally biodegradable and compostable, recyclable, and made from sustainable forests. The dispenser is also made from cardboard and recyclable.
Our greeting cards are also made locally from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified, 100% post-consumer recycled PCF. The paper is from sustainable forests.
We can’t change our suppliers packaging, but we are focusing more and more on companies who do use eco-friendly products or follow sustainable practices. We are also working on making our stickers better for the environment – but at the moment they can’t be recycled as they have an acrylic backing.
Our beautiful magnetic close boxes can be kept for a long time– please don’t throw them away. They are made from a strong cardboard so can be used for anything – as sewing boxes, for trinkets, for kids colouring pencils or toy cars, for documents, to pack things for a picnic, or for that next gift – the list is endless!
Our courier bags are compostable – made with corn starch – a renewable and sustainable resource (they can be grown and harvested in one season), PLA (a biodegradable thermoplastic) and PBAT (which is unfortunately derived from petroleum based products as there are no alternatives yet – producing a bag with 100% PLA would be too brittle). PLA and PBAT are internationally recognised as biodegradable and compostable, leaving behind no toxic residues when composted. These are certified to comply with the international standards for home and commercial composting (EN13432/AS4736/AS5810). You will need to please remove the courier sticker and non-toxic adhesive glue strip before putting in the compost. These bags can be used in many ways before composting e.g. turn them inside out as reuse as a courier bag, for weed matting, as seedling bags, as a food waste bag. Once it’s a bit worse for wear, they can then either be composted at home (needs to reach a temperature of 55 degrees or higher to break down) or through a commercial composter. The inks are soy based and non-toxic. Our supplier supports the Million Metres Streams Project.
Sometimes we may use recycled courier bags – these are made from post-consumer and post-industrial materials – so made entirely from waste. Even the packaging bag and removable adhesive backing is made from 100% recycled materials. These can be recycled where soft packaging recycling is available.
Several of our product suppliers use sustainable practices. A lot of our products are free from artificial ingredients – as we thought this was important too. As with how everything should be in life, we are always learning and trying to improve our ways.
